The Golden Rule of Tyre Upsizing: Stay Within ±3%
When changing tyre sizes or upgrading alloy wheels in India, the most critical engineering rule is to ensure the new tyre's overall rolling diameter remains within ±2% to ±3% of the original factory OEM diameter. Exceeding this boundary produces severe mechanical and electronic compromises:
- ABS & ESP Calibration: Anti-lock braking systems and Electronic Stability Control rely on wheel-speed sensor pulse frequencies calibrated to the stock tyre circumference. Large diameter shifts can trigger false ABS activations during routine braking.
- Speedometer & Odometer Inaccuracy: Tyres with larger overall diameters cover more distance per wheel rotation than your speedometer is programmed for, resulting in your speedometer under-reading actual road speed.
- Wheel Well & Strut Rubbing: Excessively wide tread sections or oversized outer diameters can scrub against inner plastic fender liners or suspension strut perches during full steering lock or suspension compression over potholes.
- Drivetrain Strain & Fuel Economy: Heavier, wider tyres increase unsprung rotational inertia, resulting in heavier steering effort, sluggish acceleration, and reduced fuel efficiency.
How Tyre Dimensions Are Calculated
1. Sidewall Height
Sidewall (mm) = Width × (Aspect Ratio ÷ 100)
For 185/65 R15: 185 × 0.65 = 120.25 mm.
2. Rim Diameter in Millimetres
Rim (mm) = Rim (inches) × 25.4
For a 15-inch rim: 15 × 25.4 = 381 mm.
3. Overall Rolling Diameter
Diameter = Rim + (2 × Sidewall)
For 185/65 R15: 381 + (2 × 120.25) = 621.5 mm.
