With 500 Nm of torque from the 2.8L diesel engine and an unladen kerb weight exceeding 2,150 kg, the Fortuner subjects its tyres to massive longitudinal braking strain and off-camber shear forces. The factory 265/60 R18 Bridgestone Dueler tyres provide adequate pavement quietness, but enthusiastic off-roaders and touring overland drivers almost universally upgrade to Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015 or BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2. Going wider than 275mm or increasing outer diameter beyond 31.5 inches requires caution: while 275/65 R18 fits under regular compression, it can scrub the plastic front fender liners on full-lock articulation when descending steep gradients.
